February 15, 2022 | min

As of Feb 15, Nutanix has announced the availability of the Nutanix Cloud Manager™ solution, beginning a new chapter in hybrid multicloud management.

Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) brings simplicity and ease of use to building and managing cloud deployments. NCM as a platform drives consistent governance across private and public clouds for its customers.

Why

Today’s enterprises are moving beyond a single cloud provider to enable better workload matching, improved redundancy, and increased agility. Multicloud is the new normal today for various reasons. Developer and IT teams want the right cloud for the right workload; some private or public clouds are good for data governance; and others are great at scaling, storage options, or AI workloads. [1] At times, businesses choose multiple cloud options to de-risk reliance on a single cloud for the business. A 2021 cloud report found that 92% of enterprises have a multicloud strategy, with respondents using an average of 2.6 public and 2.7 private clouds. [2]

The benefits of the cloud are driving an unprecedented transformation in the enterprise IT landscape; however, multicloud environments beget management complexity, cost, and security runaways that bring forth a new set of challenges for the IT organization.

To reign in security, cost, and data deluge, IT admins and decision-makers often want a single best-in-class complete solution for their cloud management needs, along with a single plane of control that can unify the management of all their cloud resources.

Enterprise IT leaders are looking at ways to adopt extensible multicloud workload deployment approaches, consistently manage and monitor workload performance and optimizations, drive policy-based governance across clouds, avoid costs spiraling out of control, and maintain manageable security risk posture and standard’s compliance.

Nutanix Cloud Manager delivers a unified multicloud management solution to address these cloud adoption challenges.

What is Being Announced

Nutanix has a long track record of delivering best-in-class management solutions, such as our Prism Pro, Calm, Beam, and Security Central products. Yet, more and more our customers were asking for not just multiple stand-alone solutions, but also for a single solution that worked together seamlessly and was easier to license. Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) addresses this very need of our customers. NCM is flexible enough that customers can choose the solution that aligns with their teams and business needs.

NCM offers four key value drivers, starting with intelligent operations, including monitoring, insights, and automated remediation. Further, it delivers self-service and orchestration for managing application and infrastructure workloads across multicloud environments. NCM also provides cost governance through accurate visibility into private and public cloud metering, chargeback, and cost optimization. And last but not least, it facilitates the customer’s security operations by automating alerts against security configurations with intelligent analysis and compliance controls.

Out of the box, NCM provides coverage for Nutanix and VMware private clouds. NCM also supports the AWS®, Azure®, and GCP® public clouds. NCM is also available as a fully-managed Software-as-a-Service option (SaaS). With NCM-SaaS, customers can experience the value of our multicloud self-service, app automation, governance, and security compliance as à la carte for capabilities without depending on our Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure.

NCM has been available in select countries since late 2021 but will now be available across all regions.

Terminology

  • A private cloud is a cloud service for only one customer. An organization can either build and maintain a private cloud themselves, or they can pay an external vendor to host a private cloud for them.
  • A public cloud is a cloud service that multiple customers use, although they don't interact with each other, just as many customers can use one bank without drawing on each other's funds.
  • "Multicloud" refers to the combination and integration of multiple public clouds. If the multicloud deployment includes a private cloud or an on-premises datacenter as well, then the cloud deployment can actually be considered a hybrid cloud.
  • A hybrid cloud infrastructure blends two or more different types of clouds, while multicloud blends different clouds of the same type.
  • A hybrid multicloud combines public cloud computing with a private cloud or on-premises infrastructure.
