Swisslos Migrates its Online Lottery Business to Nutanix

Virtual Computing Platform makes Swisslos Infrastructure Faster, Easier to Administer and More Cost-effective while Effectively Protecting Personal Customer Data

Frankfurt am Main – February 3, 2015Nutanix, the web-scale converged infrastructure company, today announced that the Swiss lottery company Swisslos has upgraded its two core data centers to an architecture based on Nutanix’s Virtual Computing Platform to offer its customers a flexible, competitive product and to future-proof its core infrastructure. By implementing Nutanix, Swisslos has seen the response times of each functional application decrease to milliseconds, indicating a massive improvement in speed across the infrastructure and increase customer satisfaction overall.

With more of the Swiss public choosing to buy their lottery tickets online, there is a need to ensure that the purchase process is working efficiently. For Swissloss, this process should ideally happen in less than 20 seconds per transaction, even when the number of online users rises abruptly, around the time of a jackpot rollover.

“The most striking features of Nutanix’s platform are its simplicity and speed,” said Joris Vuffray, Head Network & System Solutions at Swisslos. “Installation of the equipment and training of the maintenance staff only took two days in total. As of January 2015, we now operate all of our 200 Linux Virtual Machines on two Nutanix appliances located in our two Swiss data centres. Provisioned with sixteen terabytes of storage on each appliance, the Nutanix implementation can boast over eleven million page views per month. We beat any cloud provider, hands down.”

Nutanix was selected after Swisslos’ legacy infrastructure reached the end of its lifespan. The company was seeking a new solution that could support the migration of Linux Virtual Machines to the new core infrastructure and would replace incumbent hypervisors with a newly-preferred KVM Hypervisor solution. Based on Swisslos’ initial testing, it was quickly apparent that only a solution based on the principles of hyperconvergence would meet the company’s operational and performance expectations.

Only the Nutanix solution offered Swisslos the comprehensive KVM-based solution required for latency-sensitive VMs, as well as an extended management capability demanded by the Swisslos technicians to handle in-depth operational analysis, control and API-based adjustments.

With Nutanix providing a scalable, long-term platform for its business, Swisslos’ network can easily compete with, and out-perform, any of the class-leading public cloud offerings – particularly in the area of operational responsiveness, such as the uploading of new software releases.

“The innovations brought to the market by the big cloud and web companies help businesses reduce costs and efforts and deliver extraordinary user experiences. However, companies have additional priorities like the protection of intellectual property or personal data, compliance with legal and other kinds of regulation or avoiding vendor lock-ins”, said Frank Mild, Director Central-Eastern Europe & CIS at Nutanix. “Beyond the reduction of costs and dramatic increase in performance, our hyperconverged offering helps companies achieve all of the goals of their business, and this implementation by Swisslos is a great example of this in practice.”
