Announcing the Nutanix Database Service Operator for Kubernetes with support for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Microsoft SQL Server

Databases are an indispensable component of modern application development, underpinning the functionality of everything from social media platforms and online gaming to retail sites and banking applications.

However, navigating the complexities of database provisioning and management can pose significant challenges for platform teams and developers. The intricacies involved in setting up, optimizing and maintaining databases require a substantial investment of time and resources.

The problem becomes more complex when dealing with multiple dissimilar database engines, like the PostgreSQL® and MongoDB® database engines . The results are often lower developer productivity and slower time-to-market for new applications and software products.

That’s why we are excited to announce the general-availability of the Nutanix Database Service™ (NDB) Operator for Kubernetes, which makes databases a seamless part of the application development cycle, directly in the Kubernetes® cluster.

The NDB Operator for Kubernetes makes it easier for platform teams to build robust, secure database services into development platforms and faster for developers to access and attach databases to their container-based applications. What sets the NDB operator apart from other database operators is NDB itself, a unique hybrid multicloud database-as-a-service that simplifies management for the most popular database engines.

Unlike other database operators that only support one database engine, the NDB Operator for Kubernetes supports three: Microsoft SQL Server®, PostgreSQL and MongoDB database engines. This enables platform teams to manage one database service that supports multiple engines, reducing operational complexity.

NDB empowers platform teams and DBAs to control what database configurations are  available to developers – including determining operating systems and database versions – to ensure that all databases comply with security and regulatory standards. NDB also significantly simplifies tasks like database patching and backups through automation, which maintains security protections while freeing-up time for DBAs and others to focus on higher-value tasks.

For developers, the NDB Operator for Kubernetes makes it easy to provision new database instances, clone existing databases for test/dev, restore databases to a point-in-time, and tear down databases when they are no longer needed. All this can be done directly from Kubernetes environments with just a few lines of code, removing developers’ reliance on other teams and manual processes for their database needs.

As mentioned earlier, the NDB Operator for Kubernetes supports SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, three of the most popular databases for containerized applications. One operator for three database engines means less complexity for developers, too. With databases running on Nutanix's hybrid multicloud infrastructure behind the scenes, developers can be confident they’ll get the levels of database performance, scalability and resilience they need to support their applications.

You can use the Nutanix NDB Operator for Kubernetes with your Kubernetes platform of choice, including community Kubernetes, as well as the Red Hat OpenShift® and Nutanix Kubernetes Engine™ platforms. The operator is available today on artifacthub.io as well as by direct download at GitHub. We’ve also put together this demo video highlighting the operator in action. Check it out!

And, if you are attending KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2023 in Chicago this week, come visit us at Booth O15 to see NDB in action and how it can help your organization make databases an enabler to rapid, modern software development.
