Tetsuo (second from left) and his family
As a part of our “Life at Nutanix'' blog series, we occasionally profile some of our Nutants around the world to help you get a sense for our unique team and culture. This blog post features Tetsuo Miyoshi from our team in Japan. Tetsuo is a Product Marketing Manager based in Yokohama City, Japan. He normally works out of our Tokyo office but has been working remotely since March 2020 after we temporarily closed our offices due to the pandemic.
Here’s our conversation with Tetsuo where he opens up about the scope of his role, how work has shifted due to the pandemic, his best day at work, and more.
How long have you been with Nutanix?
I joined Nutanix in February 2019. I recently celebrated my 2 year anniversary.
What attracted you to Nutanix?
Before Nutanix I worked for a Nutanix partner distribution company. I was impressed by the energetic team and fast pace at Nutanix. Two years at Nutanix is like 10 years at some other companies. The people at Nutanix share an entrepreneurial mindset. We expect a lot from ourselves and from one another. We believe we can change the world together through innovation.
What do you do at Nutanix?
Most of our product marketing team is based out of headquarters in California. I am a part of the field marketing team in Japan. I do content creation, messaging, and translation for our Japanese sales representatives, our partners, and our end customers. I also work with our local sales team to understand our customers’ needs and requirements, and to share these insights with our product management team. As the only Product Marketing Manager in Japan, I work on many activities that contribute to our revenue growth.
How has your day-to-day work shifted since the pandemic?
Some things have changed and some have not. The way I communicate with teammates located outside of Japan has not changed. We continue to collaborate virtually over Zoom and Slack.
Two things that have changed are how our local team works together, and our approach to marketing. My team shifted to working and communicating virtually instead of in person at our Tokyo office. We also transitioned our marketing approach to be almost completely digital. Instead of in person seminars and Executive Briefing Center events, we moved to webinars and digital.

What is a project that you are working on that you are excited about?
I spend about 30% of my time focused on promoting Nutanix Clusters, a game-changing solution. We have our core HCI product that allows our customers to clone their cloud onto an on-prem environment. Cloud can now exist on-prem, but we also have the ability to go back to the cloud—essentially creating a “cloud on the cloud” and to leverage the same architecture to move back and forth.
It’s my job to make our sales team and channel partners aware of these programs and to help customers understand the possibilities of new ways of doing things.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am interested in learning new things. Our company has given me many opportunities to learn about new technology, new strategy, and new revenue models.
What was your best day at work?
In September 2019 we hosted .NEXT Japan. I had the opportunity to work on a keynote presentation for some of our executives for the event. It was very exciting to get to work on this and to see it delivered in Japan.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
My favorite pastime is scuba diving. My most memorable experience was in Palau.
I also have 2 kids. My sons are 7 and 3 years old. They are sometimes naughty and keep me busy.

What advice would you give someone who is considering joining Nutanix?
Nutanix is a good place for people who want to change the world with technology. People who succeed here are open to building and innovating, and excited about problem solving and learning. While Nutanix is an established company, people here share a startup mindset.
Is there a piece of career advice that you live by?
There is a Japanese proverb 'keizoku wa chikara nari' (継続は力なり). Translated into English, it is “You will never lose until you stop trying.”
